Drum Solo Workshop with Zelia

Zelia will be teaching the never before taught choreography of the (cart wheel) drum solo she performed at her last recital in Ottawa in May 2004.

Party at Dar Tajine Restaurant 7:30 p.m. with dancing and live drumming featuring Zelia, Lalita and workshop participants as well as Middle Eastern Drummer Chris Gacsi and her drumming ensemble. Call the restaurant at 232-4300 to reserve your seat stating that you are with Zelia’s party. Buffet is $14.95. Seating is limited. If you want to perform in the show, let Julie know and send in your music on CD (maximum of 5 minutes) by September 20 to the address below.

Workshop cost before September 20: $50 (cheque must be made out for and post-marked by September 20), after September 20: $60. Register early to avoid disappointment.

Directions: 417 to Moodie Drive South (exit 134). Cross Robertson Road. Turn right at the first light onto Tyrrell Place. Turn Left onto Seyton. The school parking lot is on the right. Enter by the front door. Go down the stairs to the cafeteria.

Music and video of Zelia performing this choreography will be available for sale to those who order in advance. Music is $5. The video is $20 and has all of Zelia’s performances from her last show in May and includes the choreography she will be teaching.

Zilling To The Sound Of The Middle Eastern Drum and Introduction to Middle Eastern Percussion



Middle Eastern percussionist Chris Gacsi from Upland, California

Chris has been a music educator for more than 25 years. For the past 15 years she has studied Middle Eastern, West African, Afro-Cuban/Brazilian and First Nation rhythm traditions and cultures with numerous masters. She is the artistic director for Luna Party!, a five woman World Music Ensemble. She teaches a series of World Percussion classes for women and girls, entitled The Rhythm of Life. Chris also accompanies several belly dance troupes and individual performers.

Introduction to Middle Eastern Percussion


Learn basic Rhythms on the Dumbek (Arabic Drum), Deff (Egyptian Frame Drum), and Riqq (Egyptian Tambourine), after which the group will finish with a rhythm ensemble.

There will be some drums, deffs and riqqs available for sale as well as for loan. Please specify when registering whether you have your own instruments to bring and which one, as well as if you need to borrow or purchase instruments.

Zilling To The Sound Of The Middle Eastern Drum


Learn the basic Middle Eastern rhythms on the dumbek, and then how to zill to those specific rhythms. Additionally, you will learn other zill patterns not specific to drum rhythms as well as how to zill to some popular belly dance songs.

Bring your drum and zills. There will be some drums and some zills available for use. Zills will be available for sale ranging from $15 to $20 and drums will be available for sale as well ranging from $35 to $150. Please specify when registering if you will need to borrow or buy a drum or zills.
